Planing a family reunion can end up like nailing jello to the tree if you are not careful. You have a number of “opinions” and “feelings” and how in the world do you make everybody happy and still get the family together? Here are three very important tips. These are steps 4 – 5 and 6 out of our article, “The First Ten Steps of Planning a Family Reunion.” Click here for tips 1,2,3!
Step Four: Opinions! (everyone has one or two, you know)
How are we going to get “opinions” from the rest of the family?
Here is where we need to find out what the rest of the family thinks. Admittedly, we do not know your family; you do. You need to make this section fit your family. Let us be clear.
If your family is laid back, you might want to tell them where to have it.
If your family is full of opinionated souls, you might want to give them an opportunity to “have their say” then continue from there.
This is your call and we trust you to make the right decision.

One word of advice, keep your eye on the big picture. You want your family to get together. You want a family reunion that will causes smiles, laughter, maybe a few tears, and creates lifelong memories. You may need to take a step back. You might find people want to have a family reunion, but the majority has a different idea from you. If your goal is getting the family together, mission accomplished.
However, if your real goal was going to a specific location, then a family reunion really is not your goal. No problem, just tell your family where you are going and invite them to join you.
Step Five: Get some help.
Your family, like ours, is made up of people with a variety of talents. Let’s get those talents to work for you. We have included a talent finder guide that will assist you in keeping track of the jobs needed and who in the family is best suited for the job.
Don’t underestimate this step. You need help and the more help you receive from your family, the more “buy-in” you will receive from the family. When you allow your family to participate, you are telling them they are important and you value them and their help.
Be clear on your expectations. Verify they are getting their job done and praise them when they complete the process.
Do not be a control freak….there are many ways to do just about anything. Just because they did not do it the exact way you would have done it, doesn’t mean it won’t work.
Step Six: How to communicate regarding your Family Reunions
The key to the communication process is to make it easy for you and them. Communication is vital and somewhat tricky. You MUST keep everyone informed while not being overbearing. Here are some tips.
Create a family Facebook Page. Come on over and like Branson Family Reunion Planner on Facebook.
Create a group email. Schedule a regular email update, for example every Saturday, and send out the details. Even if there is nothing BIG to report, keep people in the loop. The same time you send out the email, you should post it on your Facebook account.
If something major or really exciting happens, you can give a special update during the week.
People want to be informed. They do not want to be bugged. It is imperative to keep your family updated without becoming the pest no one wants to be around.
